Trsteno Beach — The Hidden Gem Near Budva

All Guides

While tourists crowd Jaz and Mogren, locals slip away to Trsteno — a sheltered cove with water so turquoise it looks photoshopped. Five minutes from Krimovica, this is the beach we visit most often ourselves.

Why Trsteno is Special

Trsteno sits in a natural cove protected by low rocky headlands on both sides. This shelter creates two things: unusually calm water even when other beaches have waves, and a microclimate that traps warmth. The result is water that is often 1–2 degrees warmer than Jaz and a turquoise colour caused by the sandy bottom reflecting sunlight through shallow, clear water. The beach is about 200 metres long — small enough to feel intimate, large enough that it never feels cramped even in August. Most visitors are locals and returning guests who have discovered it through word of mouth.

Getting There and Parking

From Krimovica, drive toward Budva for about three minutes, then take the signed turn-off to the right. The road descends steeply to a small parking area above the beach. Parking is free along the road — there is no formal lot. From the road, stone steps lead down to the beach in about two minutes. The walk back up is the only downside — it is steep and can be tiring in the heat, so bring only what you need. From Budva, Trsteno is about eight minutes north on the main coastal road.

Facilities

Trsteno has one beach restaurant that serves fresh fish, grilled meats, salads, and drinks at reasonable prices (mains €8–12). The food is better than most beach restaurants because the owner catches some of the fish himself. Sunbed rental is available (€8–10 per set) but many people bring their own towels and sit on the free section of the beach. There are basic changing facilities and a freshwater shower. No water sports or loud music — this is a beach for relaxation.

Swimming and Snorkelling

The water at Trsteno is perfect for swimming — calm, warm, and crystal clear. The seabed is a mix of sand and fine pebble, sloping gently for the first 15 metres before dropping to swimming depth. This makes it excellent for children who can play in the shallows safely. For snorkelling, swim to either rocky headland where you will find small fish, sea urchins (stay clear), and interesting rock formations. The visibility is typically 8–10 metres on calm days.

Best Time to Visit

Trsteno faces south-west, so it gets sun from mid-morning until sunset. The best time is late morning to late afternoon. Unlike Jaz, Trsteno rarely feels overcrowded even in peak season — the lack of large parking and the steep access naturally limits numbers. September and early October are particularly beautiful here, with warm water, golden light, and almost no one else on the beach.
